Joseph Biwald is a highly accomplished Marketing Art Director, Photographer, and Marketing Artist based in Washington State. With a decade of experience in the gaming industry, Joseph has spent his professional career developing and evolving the marketing art for Destiny 1 and Destiny 2. He holds a BFA in Digital Art and Animation from DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, WA.
Joseph began his journey at Bungie in 2014 as an intern and adeptly rose through the ranks to become the studio’s first Principal Marketing Artist. In this role, he crafted some of the most iconic key art and marketing images for the Destiny franchise, working alongside the talented Bungie Creative Studios team, formerly known as VizD. Today, he serves as the Marketing Art Director for PlayStation Studios Creative, where he oversees and directs the creation of core marketing art for Destiny 2.
Enhancing and expanding Sony's Live Service creative capabilities, while continuing to collaborate closely with the Bungie team to produce marketing art for Destiny.
As the Senior Manager of Marketing Art Direction in Publishing Creative Studios, I help direct our core art deliverables across all Bungie franchises. I oversee Key Art, Marketing Art, static compositing art, in-game capture, and production art that excites our players and delivers against Publishing and Business goals. Collaborating closely with Creative Directors, development Art Directors, and my counterparts in Art, Design, Media, and Production, I help empower a team of industry leading artists to create world class art to effectively represent Bungie’s games and elevate our marketing.
Responsibilities
•Responsible for the artistic vision of Creative Studios in support of our company and game teams’ goals.
•Sets the bar for excellence through clear guidelines, constructive feedback, and proactive collaboration.
•Develops and drives the strategy for efficient creative pipelines, documentation, tooling, and scalable outsourcing.
•In collaboration with the Discipline Manager, maintains a healthy and inclusive team where artists can thrive and do their best work.
•Provides mentorship, craft guidance, management support, constructive feedback, and career development coaching.
•Collaborates closely with other Creative Studios teams to maintain strong relationships, prioritize work, and ensure brand consistency.
•Partners with Publishing leadership to define the roadmap, scope, budget, and resourcing for the art team.
As a Principal Artists in Publishing Creative Studios, I oversee and create Key Art, marketing art, compositing art, and in-game screenshot capture that excites our players and delivers against our Publishing and business goals for Destiny. This includes direction and concept collaboration with our Art Directors and Art Leads, 3D character posing, 3D/2D environment assembly, texturing, lighting, rendering, 3D/2D compositing, postproduction, and finishing.
I am also responsible for building, mentoring, training, delegating, and directing our Creative Studios Art department on best practices and creative workflows.
Projects included: Season of the Lost, 30th Anniversary Pack, The Witch Queen, Season of the Risen, Season of the Haunted, Season of Plunder, Season of the Seraph, Season of Defiance, Lightfall, and all Destiny Live Events (2021-2023).

Supporting Destiny’s marketing efforts through capturing gameplay moments, in-game screenshots, and establishing marketing artwork leveraged in print, web, and social.
Outside of marketing was responsible for supporting the UI team with in-game icons and unique concepts.
